The value of commitments
“The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.”
2 - Reflect
Recently I had a big argument with a friend for having not fulfilled a commitment. I was supposed to go somewhere with him and it completely slipped my mind. No matter how much I had planned for it, my forgetfulness was greater and I ended up not showing up. When I realized it, I didn't really question my attitude, but days later my friend rebuked me on that matter. He told me that he had waited for me, that it was important for him that I was there and that as always, I ended up belittling the whole situation and not caring about what had happened. I felt really guilty and apologized but something told me that it was not yet resolved.
Sometimes we do not assume full responsibility for what we do to others and how it may affect them. God always wants us to take care of our affairs, but also to consider our brethren. Prioritizing them and being attentive to their needs will make us more attentive and we will not fail so easily. Breaking our promises is a serious issue, because we are messing with the time and feelings of others. When we assume a responsibility or commit to meeting someone to do something, we must comply with it and if we are unable to make it we should be able to explain why.
